Competent Roofer registration

Building Regulations self-certification for qualifying roof work

As an NFRC Competent Person Scheme registered contractor, HAC Roofing can self-certify qualifying roof refurbishment work as compliant with the relevant Building Regulations in England and Wales.

A clearer route to Building Regulations compliance

When qualifying roof refurbishment work is completed by an NFRC Competent Person Scheme registered contractor, the contractor can register and self-certify the work through the scheme. This avoids a separate Building Control route for work that falls within the scheme requirements.

After qualifying work has been completed and registered, the scheme issues the property owner with a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate. This provides an official record that the notified work complies with the relevant requirements.

From quotation to certificate

How self-certification works for the property owner

01

Confirm the proposed scope

HAC Roofing surveys the roof and confirms whether the planned refurbishment appears to fall within the scheme.

02

Plan compliant work

The specification considers the relevant Building Regulations, including insulation requirements where applicable.

03

Complete and register

Qualifying completed work is recorded through the NFRC Competent Person Scheme.

04

Receive the certificate

The scheme issues the Building Regulations Compliance Certificate for the registered work to the property owner.

Important scope limits

Not every roofing project can be self-certified

The scheme does not cover work where less than 50% of the roof is replaced, new-build roofs, changes to the roof structure, structural glazing or structural alterations other than qualifying like-for-like work. Solar and photovoltaic installation also sits outside this roofing self-certification scope.

Some projects require direct Building Control involvement or other professional advice. Planning permission, listed-building consent and conservation-area requirements are separate matters. HAC Roofing will confirm the intended certification route for the proposed roofing work, but property-specific statutory advice may still be required.

Why the certificate matters

  • Records qualifying roof refurbishment with the scheme
  • Confirms compliance for the work that was notified
  • Provides useful property documentation for future records or a sale
  • Avoids a separate Building Control application where the scheme applies

Discuss your roof refurbishment

Ask whether your project can be self-certified

Tell HAC Roofing how much of the roof is being replaced, the roof covering and whether structural changes, rooflights, solar panels or insulation changes are involved. The team can then explain the intended route within the written quotation.
